I know it’s the end of summer and we are all starting to think about fall decorating. (In editorial, we’re working on January 2012, but I can’t go there just yet.) My windows are still open at night when it’s amazing and throughout the morning, hanging onto that last bit of summer.

For a while now, I’ve considered painting my grey kitchen floor a brighter colour. A few weekends ago I jumped at the notion of the family away for the weekend and started the ball rolling. I have to say, it wasn’t as as easy as I thought.

First of all, because the floor was a dark grey, it meant I had to prime the floor, which in turn meant I had to sand it first. So I did, both. Sanded Cinderella-style, on my hands and knees, then washed and primed the floor with a terrific product from Farrow & ball called stain block primer (above). I left this to dry for two days, then waited until the following weekend when I could paint the first coat.

Again I used a Farrow & ball floor paint in Wimborne White (above), and it went on super easy and dried to a really nice finish, not too shiny, just right.

Here’s the grey, going going gone.

Weekend #3, the second and final coat was applied. I know, I’m crazy, right? but I really had no choice as our kitchen goes through tons of wear with the family, and weekends are really the only time to paint.

I have to say, I think it’s really freshened up the space. I feel a little like a salmon swimming against the fall decorating current, painting my floor white for the fall, but hey, white’s classic.
